We are BIG Bug Nerds.

Bugs are one of the components we capture to measure biodiversity and the overall health of a farm.

Insects tell a story.
Every insect on a farm is a clue — a piece of evidence in the larger story of how that ecosystem is functioning.
A flush of ladybugs, for example, might tell us there are plenty of aphids to feed on — a sign of balance between pests and predators. But if pest numbers spike, it begs the question: what’s missing? Maybe their natural enemies are low, or soil health is out of balance.

By studying insects, we can read the pulse of the land. They reveal how soil, plants, and wildlife are working together or where there is a disconnect.
Each specimen adds another layer to understanding how management decisions affect the wellbeing of every farm.
We like to say we’re changing the world, one bug at a time.

Change the World
Photographing ALL the bugs!
For insects, “processing” means taking lots of photographs. We used to do this manually, one bug at a time under a microscope. Now, with Shimsy, our custom built CNC macrophotography machine, we can photograph six trays at once, averaging 100 specimens per minute, making the process over 5X faster!

Once photographed, each image is uploaded into BugBox, our AI-powered software platform that identifies insects automatically.

With nearly 700,000 specimen images and counting, BugBox is becoming one of the most comprehensive insect databases sourced from working farms across North America and beyond.
